What to do

You can sit and read under the shady overhang of the big house or out on the patio in the yard; walk back into our own forest observing birds (over 40 species recently spotted in 2 days), and a rich variety of plants (bromeliads and orchids in the trees). Enjoy back- country biking, horseback riding, and tour the five Junipero Serra Missions: Tilaco, Tancoyol, Landa de Matamoros, Jalpan and Conca.

Las Posas, the jungle gardens created by the English eccentric Edward James, are located an hour’s drive on Route 120 to the east in Xilitla (see maps page).

The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, mentioned below, contains many eco-touristic sites of interest.

The Village of Tilaco is located in the municipality of Landa de Matamoros, next to Jalpan de Serra, both of which are within a one million acre protected region, a UNESCO World Heritage site called the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve. The Reserve represents 32 percent of the territory of the State of Queretaro. The following website explains the goals of the Biosphere Reserve and holds a wealth of information about the region:
