Artist’s Statement:

These images were made between April of 2003 and May of 2004 during my time spent with the Council of Indigenous Elders of the Huastecan Culture (CAICH), in the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico.  They communicate the daily efforts of a rural people whose lives are based around subsistence agriculture, who struggle to find their place in the midst of globalization.  The images reveal beauty rather than poverty, and they are a defense in the case of cultural diversity versus socio-political conformity.  The photographs form part of an archive shared and disseminated by both the artist and CAICH.
